SUMMARY:A Sparkle in the Shadows. Artistic Revitalization of Outlying Areas.
DESCRIPTION:The Academy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila presents “A Sparkle in the Shadows\, ” an ambitious cultural regeneration project that is part of the L’Aquila Capital of Culture 2026 program. Curated by Prof. Maurizio Coccia\, in collaboration with Profs. Matteo Ludovico and Gianni Moretti\, the project transforms contemporary art into a tool for social engagement\, capable of shedding light on the neglected corners of marginalized areas and breathing new life into the urban landscape.   \nThe project draws inspiration from Guido Piovene’s vision of the city as a “fragile and luminous” presence\, presenting a series of visual installations—sculptural\, light-based\, and textual—that make the Accademia’s architecture a constant symbolic landmark. The program is enriched by a 24-hour performance marathon\, musical events dedicated to young people\, and film festivals\, creating a space for continuous experimentation. Through the works of twenty artists from the Visual Arts two-year programs\, the Academy opens itself up to the neighborhood\, transforming public thoroughfares into spaces of collective experience and identity. SUMMARY:Focus – The School of Narrative Dance
DESCRIPTION:Produced by MAXXI L’Aquila as part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, this Focus dedicated to Marinella Senatore and her international project *The School of Narrative Dance* is curated by Chiara Bertini and features drawings\, watercolors\, and archival photographs dating back to 2014—the year the artist won the third edition of the MAXXI Prize with SOND —along with subsequent acquisitions by the MAXXI Collection in 2019. \nThe exhibition includes a map of the 30 countries around the world that have hosted *The School of Narrative Dance*\, as well as the video *Ongoing Documentary* (2013–2024)\, a visual record of a project that has built a global network of participants and communities. The exhibition is further enriched by a previously unseen video and a banner created specifically for the L’Aquila edition\, donated by the artist to the City of L’Aquila.  \n“Focus” is part of the participatory process launched by Marinella Senatore in L’Aquila\, in which artistic expression serves as a tool for collective empowerment\, social inclusion\, and civic engagement.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Dittici” brings to L’Aquila a profound and provocative exploration by photojournalist Pino Bertelli and critic Gasbarrini. The project explores the tragedy of war andviolated innocence through a series of works that create a dialogue between black-and-white documentary photography—taken in the world’s most vulnerable regions—and digital reworkings using artificial intelligence.  \nInspired by masterpieces from art history on the theme of the “Massacre of the Innocents” and conflicts\, the works create an urgent ethical counterpoint. While algorithmic technology and science are often harnessed today for militaristic purposes (drones\, surveillance\, conflicts)\, this exhibition reclaims the potential of AI\, transforming it into a tool for critical reflection and ethical creativity.  \nEach diptych serves as an open door between the past and the present: through QR codes\, visitors can interact directly with the artwork\, tracing the artistic references and messages that inspired the artificial intelligence prompts. This exhibition does not merely observe suffering; rather\, it actively challenges the viewer’s conscience regarding the technological and human future of our time.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the Giorgio de Marchis Bonanni d’Ocre Foundation presents the exhibition Shu Takahashi: A Japanese Artist in the Giorgio de Marchis Collection. A World Floating Between East and West\, curated by Anna Imponente\, former Section Director at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and Superintendent Emerita of the L’Aquila branch\, in collaboration with Ari Takahashi. \nThe exhibition explores the cultural dialogue between Italy and Japan through the personal and intellectual bond that united Shu Takahashi —one of the most representative artists of the encounter between European avant-garde movements and Eastern tradition\, who lived in Italy for many years—and Giorgio de Marchis\, Superintendent of the National Gallery of Modern Art and\, for fifteen years\, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo. The result of this deep friendship was the gift of a series of works now preserved in the Foundation’s Collection\, which forms the core of the exhibition\, enriched by loans from major Italian and Japanese public and private collections.  \nTakahashi’s work spans painting and sculpture through his famous shaped canvases —canvases with curved edges and vibrant colors inspired by the Ukiyo-e tradition—in a universal language that blends Zen minimalism with the European avant-garde. The project is sponsored bythe Embassy of Japan in Italy andthe Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome (Japan Foundation).  \nFREE ADMISSION.

SUMMARY:Earth - The Planet Through the Five Senses | INGV Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\,the INGV—National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology —presents Earth—The Planet Through the Five Senses\, an interactive and multisensory exhibition created to mark the 25th anniversary of the INGV’s founding\, designed for the general public\, families\, and schools. \nThe exhibition itinerary guides visitors on a journey of discovery through the Earth system—its internal structure\, geological evolution\, natural hazards\, and climate change—using the five senses: smell\, taste\, touch\, hearing\, and sight. Interactive thematic stations\, installations\, and exhibits allow visitors to smell the scents of the planet and space\, touch rocks\, fossils\, and 3D models\, hear the roar of an earthquake and the sound of an iceberg\, observe the propagation of seismic waves\, and admire an authentic meteorite on loan from Sapienza University of Rome.  \nAmong the most extraordinary experiences are the Vibrating Table\, which physically simulates the ground vibrations of a real seismic event; the Theremin\, which allows visitors to “listen” to the Earth’s magnetic field; and Mātrā – The Song of the Planet\, an audiovisual work by Filippo Gregoretti that transforms geophysical data from INGV monitoring stations into music. Thanks to collaborations with organizations that have long been active in the field of museum accessibility\, the exhibition is designed to be as inclusive as possible\, ensuring that every visitor\, regardless of their abilities\, can explore and understand geophysical phenomena through barrier-free pathways (including Braille panels in the section dedicated to sight\, and haptic vests next to the Mātrā installation to experience the music as a tactile-sensory experience).  \nThe exhibition will be open to the public with free admission starting Wednesday\, July 8\, according to the following schedule (valid through September 13): \n\nWednesday\, Thursday\, and Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (last admission at 6:00 p.m.);\nSaturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (last admission at 12:00 p.m.) and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (last admission at 6:00 p.m.);\nSundays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (last admission at 12:00 p.m.).\n\nThe exhibition will be closed during the week of Ferragosto (August 12–16)\, on Wednesday\, August 19\, Wednesday\, August 26\, and Friday\, August 28 (Perdonanza Celestiniana). \nFrom mid-September through October 29\, “Terra – The Planet Through the Five Senses” will be open to the public free of charge according to a schedule currently being finalized: groups of more than 8 people are asked to make a reservation by emailing info@ingv.it.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the MuBAq – L’Aquila Children’s Museum presents *With Hands Stained with Earth\, I Kissed You*\, the first section of the Lea Contestabile Retrospective Exhibition\, curated by Mariano Cipollini and supported and promoted by the City of L’Aquila. \n“L’Antologica” is a widespread exhibition project spanning the entire year of 2026 across various institutional venues in L’Aquila and its province\, each dedicated to a specific aspect of the artist’s work: approximately 50 works\, mirroring the fifty years of artistic activity by Lea Contestabile (Ortucchio\, 1949)\, a painter\, printmaker\, weaver\, and founder of MuBAq\, who ranks among the most significant figures in contemporary Abruzzo art both nationally and internationally. The works are selected not in chronological order but according to a dialogic approach\, to highlight the forms\, themes\, and variety of material solutions that characterize her body of work.  \nOn Friday\, July 17\, 2026\, at 6:00 p.m.\, the first section of this exhibition will open. DESCRIPTION:“Sensitive Forms” \nadaptive and interactive sculptural-musical work\, \nby Licia Galizia and Michelangelo Lupone\nwith the contribution of\nGSSI Gran Sasso Science Institute\nin collaboration with\nGSSI Computer Science Area\, led by Prof. Patrizio Pelliccione\nCRM Music Research Center – ETS\nPAC Contemporary Art Project\nThe Gran Sasso Science Institute Visitor Center is hosting “Forme Sensibili – Narrazione di un paesaggio”\, a sculptural-musical work created by artists Licia Galizia and Michelangelo Lupone in collaboration with the GSSI’s Computer Science department\, the CRM – ETS Center for Musical Research\, and PAC – Contemporary Art Project\, supported and promoted by the City of L’Aquila. \nThe installation takes the form of an abstract landscape in constant transformation: every gesture\, every touch\, and every visitor’s presence influences the work’s sound component\, giving rise to ever-changing and unique sound and visual configurations. The work also engages in a dialogue with the cosmos: a muon detector —which detects high-energy particles constantly traversing space—translates their passage in real time into light and sound pulses that become part of the composition. An experience in which art\, science\, and human presence merge into a single sensory narrative in perpetual flux. A tribute to Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) on the 40th anniversary of his passing\, this is the fourth event in the sixth edition of “Seminiamo Arte\,” curated by Antonio Gasbarrini and Mariano Cipollini\, and supported and promoted by the City of L’Aquila. The opening is scheduled for July 30 at 6:00 p.m.; the exhibition is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additional special opening hours in August will be announced as they become available.  \nMore than thirty Italian and international artists have been invited to participate with works and performances that are in perfect harmony with the revolutionary philosophy of Beuys’s  “Social Sculpture\, ” each interpreting in their own way the guiding principle that runs through Joseph Beuys’s entire body of work: DEFENSE OF NATURE. Sculptures\, installations\, and performances unfold within the natural setting ofthe medieval Celestine Botanical Garden\, adjacent to the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio\, transforming the green space into a place for intimate engagement with Beuys’s thought and work and into an invitation for the public to actively participate—as co-protagonists\, according to Beuys’s famous vision\, in a “peaceful and pacifying” plastic mass in the making.  \nTo round out the event\, in early September 2026\, an interdisciplinary seminar on Beuysian research and the state of the Botanical Garden\, as well as a photographic exhibition of portraits of Beuys taken by Stefano Fontebasso De Martino at the Palazzetto dei Nobili in L’Aquila.

The exhibition is part of the “L’Aquila 2026” vision\, which places the regeneration of public spaces and community participation at the heart of its cultural program\, restoring vibrant and beautiful places to the city. This journey spans a century of form\, expression\, and artistic experimentation\, revealing to the public an artist capable of moving with freedom and consistency across different artistic languages and disciplines. The stop in L’Aquila—part of an exhibition tour that began in Rome at the Association’s spaces and is set to continue at additional venues—is part of the L’Aquila 2026 initiative\, which places the promotion of Italy’s 20th-century artistic heritage at the center of its cultural program. SUMMARY:RELazioni. Visual Arts and Sculpture in the Architectural and Landscape Spaces of L'Aquila and Its Surrounding Area
DESCRIPTION:The project calls for a group of selected fine arts academies to create at least 5 works per academy during 2026\, one of which will be of medium to large in scale\, suitable for installation in the urban environment\, while the other four works will be medium to small in scale\, suitable for indoor exhibition. The Academy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila is the project leader and\, in agreement with the City of L’Aquila\, has identified five other state-run academies as project partners\, specifically the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome\, the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples\, the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara\, the Brera Academy of Fine Arts\, and the Ravenna Academy of Fine Arts\, whose participation will be featured in a special section through the creation of a work using the artistic techniques of mosaic or ceramics. There are also plans to combine the exhibition of the produced works with a competition aimed at awarding prizes to some of the created works. The opening will take place on August 20 at 6:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:The project aims to organize a series of conferences focusing specifically on the founding cities of the Apennine region of central Italy (including L’Aquila\, Leonessa\, Cittaducale\, and Cittareale)\, with in-depth analyses of the historical\, legal\, economic\, and commercial contexts within which these cities were founded. A concluding workshop will focus on contemporary urban planning issues. To round out the lecture series\, the project plans to organize a program of guided tours of the towns covered\, with a special focus on lesser-known towns\, in order to promote the growth and diversification of tourist flows along more niche itineraries.

DESCRIPTION:The project intends to focus attention on particular categories of buildings that characterize the cities of Abruzzo and Lazio: entertainment buildings. This particular category of buildings\, since ancient times\, seems to have had a special role in society\, manifesting a particular relationship between the population and central and local power. The project includes in-depth and performative activities in ancient and modern entertainment buildings scattered between the provinces of L’Aquila and Rieti (amphitheater of Amiternum\, amphitheater of Trebula Mutuesca\, Flavio Vespasiano theater in Rieti) with particular interest in ancient female cults attested mainly in Luco dei Marsi\, S. Anatolia di Borgorose\, S. Angelo di Civitella di Pescorocchiano\, S. Vittoria di Carsoli\, the so-called Baths of Cotilia in Cittaducale\, S. Vittoria in Monteleone Sabino\, Lucus Feroniae in Capena.
