SUMMARY:Music Per-Formare: Dialogues Between Sounds\, Words\, and New Cultural Frontiers - Massimo Gallucci in *Direction as the Resurrection of Bodies: Orpheus*
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the “B. Barattelli” Concert Society of L’Aquila presents a new event in the series Musica Per-Formare: Dialogues Between Sounds\, Words\, and New Cultural Frontiers\, in collaboration with the “A. Casella” Conservatory of Music in L’Aquila. \nThe featured speaker at the event is Prof. Marcello Gallucci\, a scholar\, professor\, and essayist from L’Aquila\, who teaches History of the Performing Arts and Literature and Philosophy of Theater at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The conversation will focus on the theme “Directing as the Resurrection of Bodies: Orpheus”: an intellectual journey that traces the roots of modern directing—from dramatic theater to opera—through the intersections between Körperkultur and eurythmy\, and the author’s long collaboration with Maestro Yuri P. Lyubimov. A reflection on theater as a formative\, civic\, and collective experience\, far removed from the logic of pure entertainment. \nThe concert opens with a musical introduction by a trio from the “A. Casella” Conservatory — Raffaele Apolloni (clarinet)\, Tommaso Lungheu (violin)\, and Valentina Martino (cello) — performing “Followers” by composer Gianmarco Tuzi\, a three-part piece built around the interplay of the instruments’ timbres and dynamics. \nFREE ADMISSION. The event will be streamed live on Barattelli’s social media platforms and broadcast live on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Music and Architecture – Places of Time and Music | 30th Organ and Early Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the “B. Barattelli” Concert Society of L’Aquila kicks off the 30th edition of the Organ and Early Music Festival with a concert dedicated to sonatas\, toccatas\, and cantatas from the Italian and European Baroque periods. \nThe star of the evening is soprano Lucia Casagrande Raffi\, one of Italy’s most active performers of opera and chamber music repertoire\, accompanied by three musicians from L’Aquila: violinist Federico Cardilli\, cellist Giulio Ferretti\, and organist Ettore Maria Del Romano. The program ranges from the instrumental sonatas and toccatas of Corelli\, Vivaldi\, and Mascitti to the cantatas of Bach\, Giordani\, and Handel. \nThe concert will take place atthe Oratory of Sant’Antonio dei Cavalieri de Nardis\, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture in L’Aquila\, which houses one of Italy’s most precious original and fully functional instruments:the organ built by Luca Neri in 1650. The venue is not merely a backdrop for the event\, but an integral part of the musical experience\, embodying that dialogue between sound\, history\, and architecture that is the very soul of the entire festival. \nAdmission is free while seats are available.

SUMMARY:Music Per-Formare: Dialogues Between Sounds\, Words\, and New Cultural Frontiers - Francesco Marola: *Don Giovanni* in the Romantic Tradition: From Mozart to E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Story
DESCRIPTION:The “Musica Per-Formare” series\, organized by the “B. Barattelli” Concert Society of L’Aquila for L’Aquila\, Italian Capital of Culture 2026\, continues with a prestigious event dedicated to one of the most iconic figures in European culture. Prof. Francesco Marola\, a professor at the University of L’Aquila\, will guide the audience on a literary and philosophical journey exploring the evolution of “Don Giovanni” from 17th-century comic theater to its complex Romantic reimagining. The discussion will explore how E.T.A. Hoffmann’s restlessness and the influences of Goethe’s *Faust* transformed Mozart’s libertine into a tragic hero hungry for the absolute. \nThe event\, sponsored by the City of L’Aquila\, will feature an exceptional musical prelude in collaboration with the “A. Casella” Conservatory. The METIS Trio will premiere“Moto Perpetuo”by the young composer Francesco Brandolini\, a contemporary work that explores dynamic combinations based on hexatonal scales. The event represents a valuable opportunity for multidisciplinary exploration\, weaving together sound and words in the heart of the historic center\, reaffirming L’Aquila’s role as an international cultural hub. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:Music to Shape: Dialogues Between Sounds\, Words\, and New Cultural Frontiers - Cesare Scarton: "Directing in Opera"
DESCRIPTION:As part of the “Musica Per-Formare” project organized by the “B. Barattelli” Concert Society of L’Aquila\, promoted in conjunction with L’Aquila’s designation as the 2026 Italian Capital of Culture\, a high-profile event dedicated tothe evolution of opera direction will be held. The event’s featured speaker is Cesare Scarton\, a director\, professor\, and vocal expert\, who will analyze how opera direction has evolved since the 1950s.\nThrough an analysis of various productions of Giuseppe Verdi’s *La traviata* —from the most traditional to the most experimental—Scarton will illustrate how opera serves as a mirror of society and a witness to the changes of our time.\nThe event\, in keeping with the spirit of “L’Aquila: City of the Multiverse\,” bridges the gap between theoretical reflection and new creativity: during the event\, the world premiere of “To Descent” for violin\, cello\, and piano—a new composition by the young talent Gabriele Pingue—will be performed by the METIS Trio. This moment of dialogue between established artists and the next generation reinforces L’Aquila’s role as a laboratory open to the arts. \nFREE ADMISSION\nThe event is being streamed live on the Società Aquilana dei Concerti’s Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Ars Trio and Ars Ludi - 80th Season of the "Bonaventura Barattelli" Aquila Concert Society
DESCRIPTION:ARS TRIO OF ROME\nLaura Pietrocini\, piano\nMarco Fiorentini\, violin\nValeriano Taddeo\, cello \nARS LUDI\n; Antonio Caggiano\, Rodolfo Rossi\, Gian Luca Ruggeri on percussion \nMusic by Ives\, Takemitsu\, and Shostakovich \nA special event marks the 80th season of the “B. Barattelli” Aquila Concert Society. The stars of the event arethe Ars Trio of Rome\, a leading force in Italian chamber music\, and the percussion ensemble Ars Ludi\, winner of the prestigious Silver Lion at the 2022 Venice Music Biennale. \nThe program explores the 20th century through the themes of “quotation” and sonic memory. The opening features the genius of Charles Ives with his Trio\, a work that blends classical and folk music in a revolutionary polyrhythmic composition. This is followed by the ethereal poetry of Tōru Takemitsu’s *Rain Tree*\, a piece for three percussionists inspired by Japanese aesthetics\, in which sound emerges from silence like raindrops. \nThe highlight of the evening is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15\, presented in Viktor Derevianko’s historic chamber music arrangement for trio and percussion. An enigmatic work\, approved by the composer himself\, in which references to Rossini and Wagner become clues to an intimate and allusive spiritual testament. An unmissable musical journey that combines tradition and experimentation in the heart of L’Aquila\, the 2026 Capital of Culture. \nFOR INFORMATION AND TICKETS\nwww.barattelli.it

SUMMARY:Schubert's "Armida" Quartet - 80th Season of the "Bonaventura Barattelli" Aquila Concert Society
DESCRIPTION:The star of this first event is the Armida Quartet\, an internationally renowned ensemble composed of violinists Martin Fulda and Wojciech Koprowski\, violist Teresa Schwamm\, and cellist Peter-Philipp Staemmler. The quartet made a name for itself on the international scene by winning first prize at the ARD Competition in Munich in 2012 and is now recognized for the high quality of its performances and the originality of its artistic projects. Active in Europe’s major musical centers\, the quartet is distinguished by a rigorous yet innovative approach to the repertoire.\nDeparting from the chronological order of composition\, this first concert brings together two emblematic works from Schubert’s oeuvre: the String Quartet No. 9 in G minor\, D. 173\, an early work of great freshness and verve\, and the monumental String Quartet No. 15 in G major\, Op. 161\, D. 887\, a masterpiece of his mature period\, characterized by extraordinary expressive richness and a dramatic tension of rare intensity.\nThis quartet cycle is presented not only as a tribute to one of the greatest composers—considered Beethoven’s heir—but also asa unique opportunity to experience Schubert’s captivating and passionate music. \nFOR INFORMATION AND TICKETS\nwww.barattelli.it

SUMMARY:The Carnival of the Animals
DESCRIPTION:The program opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto No. 10 in E-flat major for two pianos and orchestra\, K. 365\, a masterpiece of the double-piano repertoire composed in 1779. DESCRIPTION:Sandro Cappelletto\nThe Quartets of Franz Schubert \nAs part of “Musica Per-Formare. Dialogues Between Sounds\, Words\, and New Cultural Frontiers\,” a project promoted by the L’Aquila Concert Society “Bonaventura\nBarattelli” as part of L’Aquila: Italian Capital of Culture 2026\, renowned music critic Sandro Cappelletto discusses “Franz Schubert’s String Quartets.”\nSchubert composed fifteen string quartets\, in addition to various separate movements\, between 1812 and 1826. Only one—the String Quartet in A minor\, D. 804—was published during the composer’s lifetime. Of the other fourteen\, nine were made available before 1870 by the publisher Peters\, and the remainder appeared in print in 1890 as part of the complete edition of his works\, published in forty volumes by Breitkopf & Haertel between 1884 and 1897. “The most daring and free-spirited of all modern musicians”—this is how Robert Schumann described Franz Schubert\, whose final years have been the subject of studies\, research\, and a publication by Sandro Cappelletto. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:Piano Recital by Nikoaj Luganskij - 80th Season of the "Bonaventura Barattelli" Aquila Concert Society
DESCRIPTION:The concert series featuring leading pianists from the international scene\, part of the 80th season of the “B. Barattelli” Aquila Concert Society\, continues with the great Nikolai Luganskij. The pianist is internationally renowned for his interpretations of Rachmaninoff\, Prokofiev\, Chopin\, and Debussy. He has received numerous awards for his recordings and artistic achievements. He collaborates regularly with the world’s greatest conductors and is frequently invited by leading Two years after his last performance in L’Aquila\, he presents a program featuring three works representative of the Romantic aesthetic. In 1839\, Robert Schumann and Fryderyk Chopin\, far from home and facing difficult circumstances\, composed three piano masterpieces. In Vienna\, Schumann wrote *The Vienna Carnival*\, Op. 26\, and the *Humoresque*\, Op. 20\, while Chopin completed the 24 Preludes\, Op. 28\, in Valldemossa\, Spain. The three works are composed of short\, contrasting episodes that are self-contained. The “Viennese Carnival” is a sonata in disguise—brilliant and irreverent—with a hidden reference to “La Marseillaise.” The *Humoresque*\, written in a week “between laughter and tears\,” blends irony and intimacy within a broad and ever-changing structure. Chopin’s 24 Preludes\, inspired by Bach’s model\, follow the circle of fifths but stand as independent pieces. Each prelude embodies a distinct character\, ranging from virtuosic flair to lyricism and feverish restlessness. Music born of unease\, yet destined for eternal beauty. A must-see concert event for piano enthusiasts and for the chance to hear one of the world’s greatest performers. https://barattelli.it/eventi/nikolai-lugansky-pianoforte/ \nAdmission fee:\nwww.barattelli.it
