SUMMARY:Open Houses - Cultural Residences
DESCRIPTION:On the last Sunday of the month\, L’Aquila’s private cultural heritage takes center stage with “Palazzi Aperti\,” an initiative organized by ADSI Abruzzo andthe Angelo de Nardis ETS Association. As part of L’Aquila’s designation as the Italian Capital of Culture\, the event offers a chance to discover the widespread beauty hidden behind the doors of L’Aquila’s palaces. A new feature of the July 26 opening will be the guided tour “Singing Stones—Symbols and Messages of L’Aquila’s Courtyards.” Among the most distinctive features of L’Aquila’s historic palaces is\, in fact\, the culture of the courtyard: sometimes a grand entrance hall\, sometimes an intimate cloister\, sometimes punctuated by arcades and terraces\, and sometimes a silent guardian of ancient legacies. For this reason\, the “Palazzi Aperti” program must include a tour that allows visitors to discover some of the most significant courtyards\, looking beyond mere architectural details: searching for the animals and symbols hidden among the leaves on the capitals\, recognizing the most ancient motifs concealed beneath the sumptuous layers of white stone\, and discerning coats of arms and emblems—especially when they become messages meant to transcend the centuries. \nThe day will conclude in a courtyard—that of the 14th-century Palazzo Piccirilli-Bucciarelli\, which houses some of L’Aquila’s most precious medieval artifacts—with the concert “Naples and Abruzzo—The Abruzzese Masters of the Romanza in Naples.” The concert\, which is free to the public\, is organized bythe Euterpe Music Association. \nDue to high demand\, Palazzo Nardis—which has been inhabited by the same family for 750 years and still preserves artifacts and furnishings from bygone eras—will also reopen its doors for guided tours\, as well as Palazzo Alfieri\, an extraordinary Renaissance palace preserved in its 15th-century form\, now cared for by the Franciscan sisters of the Santa Maria degli Angeli Institute. \nFinally\, there will be the usual guided tours of the art spaces at Palazzo Benedetti\, whose frescoed halls are currently hosting the exhibition “With Hands Stained with Earth\, I Kissed You” by Lea Contestabile\, as well as at the Oratory of the Knights of Nardis\, a masterpiece of Abruzzese Baroque architecture. In the same oratory\, at 6:00 p.m.\, Silvia Mantini will give a lecture\, organized by Archeoclub L’Aquila\, titled “Society and Culture in L’Aquila During the Spanish Period.” Reservations for the lecture can be made by emailing archeoclublaquila@gmail.com. \nDETAILED PROGRAM\nGUIDED TOURS \n\nWalking Tour : “Singing Stones” – Symbols and Messages from L’Aquila’s Courtyards | 5:00 p.m.\nPalazzo Nardis – Via San Marciano\, 9 | 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.\nPalazzo Alfieri – Via Fortebraccio\, 54 | 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.\nOratory of the Knights of Nardis – Via San Marciano | 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.\nPalazzo Benedetti – Via Sassa\, 15 | 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 4–8 p.m. (includes a guided tour of the temporary exhibition “With My Hands Stained with Earth\, I Kissed You” by Lea Contestabile)\n\nCONFERENCE \nOratory of the Knights of Nardis | 6:00 p.m.\nSOCIETY AND CULTURE IN L’AQUILA DURING THE SPANISH PERIOD (16th–17th CENTURIES)\nSilvia Mantini (University of L’Aquila)\nOrganized by Archeoclub L’Aquila \nCONCERT \nPalazzo Piccirilli-Bucciarelli | 9:00 p.m.\nNAPLES AND THE ABRUZZO – The Abruzzo Masters of the Romanza in Naples\nJolanta Stanelyte\, soprano · Francesco Marsiglia\, tenor · Guido Galterio\, piano\nOrganized by the Associazione Musicale Euterpe

SUMMARY:THE OPPOSITE OF ONE - Stories to Start Over
DESCRIPTION:“Stories for a New Beginning” is a site-specific\, community-based theater project that transforms the landscape into a stage and the time of sunset into a shared moment of listening. Conceived and produced by Vesuvioteatro\, with artistic direction by Claudio Di Palma and artistic consultation by Giulio Baffi\, this eco-sustainable theater festival unfolds through traveling performances designed to engage intimately with sites of historical\, architectural\, and scenic value\, without resorting to invasive set designs\, electrical equipment\, or artificial amplification. Natural light and ambient sound become an integral part of the dramaturgy\, restoring to theater an essential\, poetic\, and deeply contemporary dimension. \nTHE OPPOSITE OF ONE\nby Erri De Luca\nedited by Manuel Di Martino\nwith Emanuele D’Errico\, Mario Meles\, Antonio Elia\nProduced by Teatro Augusteo \nA young man lost in the whirlwind of fleeing bodies\, running to escape the police charge. A stubborn laborer who\, for days\, battles death to dig a tunnel six meters underground in search of the sewers. A father and son and their final games of bridge. A class of teenagers on the day they become men. Told in this way\, these lives are a pure political manifestation—in the Greek sense of the term: that which concerns the common good—and imbued with raw\, moving humanity. In this age of desperate loneliness\, these four stories remind us of the urgency of putting our relationships with others back at the center. With others. And what better way to do that than through theater? \n\nFREE ADMISSION ( In case of rain\, performances may be postponed) \nFOR MORE INFORMATION\nYou can message us on WhatsApp: 3335691511\nYou can send an email to: info@vesuvioteatro.org

SUMMARY:LEA CONTESTABILE | With my hands covered in dirt\, I kissed you
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the MuBAq – L’Aquila Children’s Museum presents *With Hands Stained with Earth\, I Kissed You*\, the first section of the Lea Contestabile Retrospective Exhibition\, curated by Mariano Cipollini and supported and promoted by the City of L’Aquila. \n“L’Antologica” is a widespread exhibition project spanning the entire year of 2026 across various institutional venues in L’Aquila and its province\, each dedicated to a specific aspect of the artist’s work: approximately 50 works\, mirroring the fifty years of artistic activity by Lea Contestabile (Ortucchio\, 1949)\, a painter\, printmaker\, weaver\, and founder of MuBAq\, who ranks among the most significant figures in contemporary Abruzzo art both nationally and internationally. The works are selected not in chronological order but according to a dialogic approach\, to highlight the forms\, themes\, and variety of material solutions that characterize her body of work. \nOn Friday\, July 17\, 2026\, at 6:00 p.m.\, the first section of this exhibition will open. Hosted in the ten rooms of Palazzo Benedetti —reopened to the public for L’Aquila 2026—the exhibition is conceived as a journey through a lifetime: through tapestries\, rugs\, terracotta works\, and sculptures\, the artist weaves stories of memory\, belonging\, and place\, in which earth and flesh\, suffering\, and the dignity of being become a visceral and inseparable bond. \nFREE ADMISSION – JULY HOURS:\nJuly 24–25: 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM\nJuly 26: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM / 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM\nJuly 29–30: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.\nJuly 31: 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:I Am My Songs | Gaetano Curreri
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026—Italian Capital of Culture—and *I Cantieri dell’Immaginario*\, the “B. Barattelli” Concert Society of L’Aquila presents Io Sono le Mie Canzoni\, a show by Gaetano Curreri —the heart and soul of Stadio —accompanied on stage by Roberto Drovandi and Andrea Fornili\, longtime collaborators on an artistic journey spanning over forty years. \nA moving journey through the songs that have shaped entire generations: “Acqua e Sapone\, ” “Un giorno mi dirai\,” “Chiedi chi erano i Beatles\,” and many other tracks that have stood the test of time without losing their power or identity—all written by Curreri. Also on stage are a dance troupe and an ensemble of musicians in a production designed to highlight the full emotional power of a repertoire that is part of Italy’s collective memory. The show includes tributes to the great artists with whom Curreri has collaborated throughout his career— Lucio Dalla\, Vasco Rossi\, Patty Pravo\, Laura Pausini —and a particularly poignant moment dedicated to Giovanni Pezzoli\, his lifelong partner on stage. A bridge between generations underscored by recent collaborations with Gué and Tommaso Paradiso at the latest Sanremo Festival: a passing of the torch that demonstrates how Stadio’s sound is still alive\, relevant\, and a source of inspiration. \nTickets are available at www.ciaotickets.com.

SUMMARY:Organ Improvisation on Historical Instruments | Martin Sturm for the 30th Organ and Early Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the L’Aquila Concert Society “B. Barattelli” presents an extraordinarily rare event for the 30th edition of the Organ and Early Music Festival “Music and Architecture – Places of Time and Music”: German virtuoso Martin Sturm —organist\, composer\, professor\, and director of the Department of Sacred Music and Organ atthe Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar — brings the art of real-time organ improvisation to L’Aquila\, performing on both of the historic instruments at the Basilica of St. Bernardino of Siena. \nIn the first part of the concert\, Sturm performs his own *Missa per Organo* on the monumental 1726 organ by Feliciano Fedeli\, located on the counter-façade and considered one of the largest and best-preserved examples of 18th-century Italian organ architecture. In the second part\, he takes his place at the 1939 organ by Vincenzo Mascioni\, situated behind the High Altar: two historic voices from one of L’Aquila’s most significant and iconic basilicas\, in dialogue with the improvisational creativity of one of the most award-winning performers on the international scene\, winner of prestigious competitions and the Kulturpreis Bayern. \nThe event is organized in collaboration with the Order of Friars Minor\, the Archdiocese of L’Aquila\, and the Central Directorate for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior. \nFREE ADMISSION UNTIL ALL AVAILABLE SEATS ARE FILLED.

SUMMARY:TEXTURE | Textured Body
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the e-Motion Group presents TEXTURE – Body in Weave\, a participatory dance project that creates a dialogue between bodily movement and the gestures of traditional Abruzzese weaving\, intertwining intangible heritage\, artisanal practices\, and contemporary forms of expression. \nThe project is based on a specific cultural premise: dance and weaving share the same fundamental dimensions—ecological\, communal\, rhythmic\, symbolic\, and narrative. In Abruzzo\, weaving is historically linked to pastoral life and transhumance: processing wool\, spinning it\, and weaving it were not merely productive necessities\, but daily acts imbued with symbolic and social meaning. TEXTURE revives this memory through the dancing body\, which absorbs its rhythms and reinterprets them as movement. \nThe workshops—led by the dancers of the e-Motion Group in collaboration with local craftswomen and weavers —are divided into four phases: an introduction to artisanal knowledge and weaving materials; physical interpretation of the gestures (weaving\, stretching\, repeating); improvisation as a space for freedom and reappropriation of the body; and a final public presentation open to the community\, in which bodies\, threads\, and fabrics interact in space through a participatory performance. \nINFO AND RESERVATIONS: info@gruppoemotion.net

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Emergencies. The Evolution of Procedures for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the National Fire Department is organizing a conference in L’Aquila dedicated to the evolution of techniques and procedures for securing cultural heritage during emergencies\, with particular reference to the experience gained in the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake and the role of the Coordination Unit for Temporary Works (N.C.P.)\, established in the aftermath of the L’Aquila earthquake. \nThe conference\, aimed at engineers\, architects\, and technical professionals in the field\, analyzes the Corps’ response capabilities in managing structural issues and outlines the new\, optimized procedures for safeguarding the historical and artistic heritage. At the center of the discussion are the STOP data sheets—technical tools developed by the post-earthquake working group for the reinforcement of damaged buildings—which will be presented by some of the key figures involved in their development. \nSpeakers will include Stefano Grimaz\, holder of the UNESCO Chair in Intersectoral Safety for Risk Reduction at the University of Udine\, and provincial commanders Mauro Caciolai (Milan)\, Luca Ponticelli (Potenza)\, and Ciro Bolognese (Varese). A site visit to the National Museum of Abruzzo – MuNDA is planned to observe firsthand the results of the safety measures and post-earthquake reconstruction efforts. \nThe initiative reinforces L’Aquila’s role as a national center of expertise and best practices in the protection of cultural heritage during seismic emergencies.

SUMMARY:Nanakorobi Yaoki “Fall seven times\, get up the eighth”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the Giorgio de Marchis Bonanni d’Ocre Foundation presents the exhibition Shu Takahashi: A Japanese Artist in the Giorgio de Marchis Collection. A World Floating Between East and West\, curated by Anna Imponente\, former Section Director at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and Superintendent Emerita of the L’Aquila branch\, in collaboration with Ari Takahashi. \nThe exhibition explores the cultural dialogue between Italy and Japan through the personal and intellectual bond that united Shu Takahashi —one of the most representative artists of the encounter between European avant-garde movements and Eastern tradition\, who lived in Italy for many years—and Giorgio de Marchis\, Superintendent of the National Gallery of Modern Art and\, for fifteen years\, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo. The result of this deep friendship was the gift of a series of works now preserved in the Foundation’s Collection\, which forms the core of the exhibition\, enriched by loans from major Italian and Japanese public and private collections. \nTakahashi’s work spans painting and sculpture through his famous shaped canvases —canvases with curved edges and vibrant colors inspired by the Ukiyo-e tradition—in a universal language that blends Zen minimalism with the European avant-garde. The project is sponsored bythe Embassy of Japan in Italy andthe Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome (Japan Foundation). \nFREE ADMISSION.

SUMMARY:CONTAMINATIONS. Against War and the Denial of Childhood Innocence - Photographic Diptychs by Pino Bertelli and Antonio Gasbarrini
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Dittici” brings to L’Aquila a profound and provocative exploration by photojournalist Pino Bertelli and critic Gasbarrini. The project explores the tragedy of war andviolated innocence through a series of works that create a dialogue between black-and-white documentary photography—taken in the world’s most vulnerable regions—and digital reworkings using artificial intelligence. \nInspired by masterpieces from art history on the theme of the “Massacre of the Innocents” and conflicts\, the works create an urgent ethical counterpoint. While algorithmic technology and science are often harnessed today for militaristic purposes (drones\, surveillance\, conflicts)\, this exhibition reclaims the potential of AI\, transforming it into a tool for critical reflection and ethical creativity. \nEach diptych serves as an open door between the past and the present: through QR codes\, visitors can interact directly with the artwork\, tracing the artistic references and messages that inspired the artificial intelligence prompts. This exhibition does not merely observe suffering; rather\, it actively challenges the viewer’s conscience regarding the technological and human future of our time.
