SUMMARY:Paolina – The Girl Without Youth | Screening of the documentary film
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the Experimental Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSPAC) is hosting a screening of *Paolina – The Girl Without Youth*\, a documentary film producedby the L’Aquila Film Institute “La Lanterna Magica” ETS and dedicated to Paolina Giorgi\, an artist from L’Aquila who was a leading figure in the world of the Café-chantant between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nA figure of extraordinary courage\, Paolina Giorgi was one of the most original voices in the entertainment world of the Belle Époque. In 1911\, she also became infamous for the tragic murder she suffered at the hands of a rejected suitor\, in one of the most sensational cases of femicide of the era. The documentary film—shot entirely in Abruzzo\, at locations connected to her life—paints a portrait of her through theatrical reenactments\, testimonies\, and archival documents\, using an innovative approach that makes extensive useof artificial intelligence\, marking a new experiment in Abruzzo’s film scene. \nDirected by Fabrizio Pompei\, with a screenplay by Iaia Centofanti and original music by Elena Floris\, the film is based on the research of Errico Centofanti\, who has been bringing the figure of Paolina Giorgi back into the spotlight since 2008. Among the contributions is an interview with writer Donatella Di Pietrantonio —winner of the Strega Prize and the Campiello Prize—who reflects on the role of literature in giving a voice to women who are victims of violence. \nFREE ADMISSION.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, Geely Auto\, in collaboration with Galleria Gaburro\, presents Beyond the Visible\, a project by Chinese artist Liu Bolin\, which is coming to Abruzzo for the first time with a new series of performances and photographs dedicated to the region’s iconic landmarks. \nAt the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio\, one of the most iconic monuments representing the historical and spiritual identity of L’Aquila\, the public is invited to witness the entire performance live: from the preparation of the body painting to the artist’s gradual blending into the basilica’s architecture\, culminating in the creation of the never-before-seen photograph that serves as the final result. SUMMARY:Adolescĕre - Let's Sow Art\, 6th Edition
DESCRIPTION:Curated by WindMill in collaboration with the artists of the Women Visual Artists Database \nMe—a teenager?\nIf she were to suddenly appear before me right here\, right now\,\nshould I perhaps greet her as a loved one\,\neven though she is a stranger to me and far away? \nWisława Szymborska\ntranslated by Pietro Marchesani\nfrom “Due punti/Qui\,” Libri Scheiwiller\, 2010 \nThe MuBAq Children’s Museum in L’Aquila\, thanks to WinMill and the artists from the Women Visual Artists Database\, is bringing a project to L’Aquila\, the Capital of Culture\, on a theme that is far removed from the conventional art world—one that is perhaps uncomfortable but of great interest and engagement for audiences of all generations\, whether or not they are accustomed to attending artistic events.\nArtists from the Women Visual Artists Database around the world were invited to reflect on this particular experience\, drawing on their own personal experiences as well as those of others—such as their children\, siblings\, and friends.\nEach of the 122 artists presents a work—a sort of diptych consisting of a visual component and a textual component\, which often blend and merge—making this a unique art project meant to be both seen and read.\nTogether\, the works form a panorama of emotions and memories\, of inner conflicts\, bearing witness to the changing relationship with one’s own body and mind. A deeply moving story told through images and words\, in which people can recognize their own experiences and let themselves be drawn in.\nThe exhibition project is designed to “travel” to different cities and countries\, fostering talks\, performances\, and audience engagement—particularly with teenagers. At the end of the exhibition\, the artworks and their accompanying texts will be compiled into an artist’s book\, which will be donated to a public institution. The book will also be published in digital format and available for free download from the website of the non-profit WindMill Association. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:"Ecce Homo" by Antonello da Messina | Opening
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila 2026\, Italian Capital of Culture\, the National Museum of Abruzzo – MuNDA is inaugurating the permanent exhibitionof Antonello da Messina’s *Ecce Homo*\, a small double-sided panel—painted on both sides—which became part of the national heritage in February 2026 and was added to the museum’s collections under inventory number OPS 2800. \nThe work was first presented in 1981 by art historian Federico Zeri during a conference dedicated to Antonello da Messina. Its extremely small size and the presence of two devotional images suggest that the panel was intended for private devotion: it is plausible that the owner carried it with him\, kept in a small cloth or leather case\, using it as an aid for meditation and personal prayer. \nThe front depicts the*Ecce Homo*\, Christ presented to the people after the flagellation. The reverse side depicts Saint Jerome kneeling in a desert landscape\, praying before a small crucifix embedded in the rock. The severe wear on this side of the panel suggests that it was frequently kissed during prayer\, a common practice in late-medieval private devotion. \nThe acquisition of *Ecce Homo* enriches MuNDA’s collection and reaffirms the role of *L’Aquila 2026* as an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the nation’s historical and artistic heritage.

SUMMARY:Marinella Senatore\, The School of Narrative Dance\, L'Aquila\, curated by Chiara Bertini
DESCRIPTION:A collective ritual that transforms the city into a vast stage\, capable of restoring to the community an active role in the construction of meaning\, identity\, and community.\nThe performance began as a traveling storytelling school\, founded on the principles of empowerment\, inclusion\, and self-education. An extensive phase of research in the local area accompanied its development\, placing the social fabric at the center of the project.\nThrough this work\, Marinella Senatore reflects on the concept of a work of art as a participatory form of expression\, capable of shaping the character of the local area and the social dynamics that define it. \nThe performance winds its way from MAXXI L’Aquila to Piazzale Collemaggio.

DESCRIPTION:As part of SOND – The School of Narrative Dance by Marinella Senatore\, produced by MAXXI L’Aquila for the L’Aquila 2026 Italian Capital of Culture program\, the Bodysound workshop explores the body as an instrument for sound and composition. \nClapping\, footsteps\, breathing\, and vocalizations become creative elements for building collective rhythmic landscapes. The process gradually evolves from basic rhythmic patterns toward more complex choral structures\, in which coordination\, memory\, and shared focus guide participants toward shared choreographic forms. \nThe workshop is part of the participatory process of SOND\, an international project through which Marinella Senatore uses artistic expression as a tool for collective empowerment\, social inclusion\, and civic engagement\, in line with the cultural vision of L’Aquila 2026. Italian Sign Language interpretation will be provided. \nFREE ADMISSION\, BUT RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED

DESCRIPTION:As part of SOND – The School of Narrative Dance by Marinella Senatore\, produced by MAXXI L’Aquila for the L’Aquila 2026 Italian Capital of Culture program\, this somatic movement workshop explores the body as a space for creative decision-making and authentic expression. \nThrough practices of inner listening\, exercises in breath awareness\, and postural alignment\, participants are guided to rediscover the expressive potential already present in everyday movement. SUMMARY:Positive Stories - 34th Edition of the Paolo Borsellino Award
DESCRIPTION:As part of the celebrations for L’Aquila\, Capital of Culture and Legality\, the shared remembrance initiative launched in collaboration with the 34th Borsellino Award will conclude on Saturday\, May 30\, with an event of international significance. The event\, titled “Capaci di credere” (Capable of Believing)\, stems from the desire to transform the memory of the sacrifice of Giovanni Falcone and the victims of the Mafia into an ethic for the present\, founded on responsibility and the overcoming of indifference. \nThe highlight of the evening will be Gen Verde – International Performing Arts Group\, which will offer a powerful musical tribute dedicated to the values of brotherhood and justice. Through the universal language of art\, the group invites citizens—and young people in particular—to view the world with a critical eye and to rediscover civic engagement as a form of ethical resistance. The performance thus becomes an opportunity to reaffirm that the fight against the mafia is won by remaining “more humane and more just\,” building a society capable of choosing the common good and the values of the Constitution every day.

SUMMARY:La Perdonanza in Schools
DESCRIPTION:Young people and the school community take center stage in preserving memory through “La Perdonanza nelle scuole.” The event\, promoted by the City of L’Aquila and supported by Unioncamere through PNC funds allocated to the PNRR\, marks the culmination of the project “La Perdonanza Celestiniana: An Intangible Hub for a Universal Identity\, ” which is part of the official program for L’Aquila\, Italian Capital of Culture 2026. \nThe initiative aims to highlight the Perdonanza—a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—by transforming it into a permanent forum for civic engagement for future generations. High school students from the city\, supported by the historic associations that preserve the tradition of the Corteo (Jemo ‘nnanzi\, Sbandieratori\, Uomini d’Arme\, Movimento Celestiniano\, and Bandierai dei Quattro Quarti)\, will present their original works. Through artistic\, audiovisual\, musical\, and digital media\, the students will address a central question: “If you were Celestino today\, what message would you leave for the world of tomorrow?”\, creating a dialogue between history and contemporary values of peace\, forgiveness\, and inclusion.

The project embodies the desire to strengthen ties with the region where many began their artistic journey\, creating job opportunities and promoting the local heritage\, which consists of cultural assets and traditions. SUMMARY:Open Houses - Cultural Residences
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 24\, the National Day of Historic Homes returns throughout Italy\, organized bythe Association of Italian Historic Homes (ADSI). In L’Aquila\, the event takes on special significance\, as it is part of the “Open Palaces – Cultural Residences” project\, which brings dozens of historic palaces in L’Aquila into the network of the Capital of Culture. SUMMARY:Nanakorobi Yaoki “Fall seven times\, get up the eighth”
DESCRIPTION:A meeting with artist Keiko Udaka\, who will demonstrate the art of creating a Nō mask\, blending tradition and innovation. \nNō is a dramatic theatrical form consisting of music\, singing\, mimetic movements\, and dance\, passed down from master to disciple since its inception in the late 14th century. Through its masks\, Nō theater explores human emotions: love\, jealousy\, anger\, ferocity\, passion\, betrayal\, redemption\, and death.\nThe Giorgio de Marchis Foundation has decided to feature Nō theater as part of L’Aquila’s bid to become the Italian Capital of Culture 2026\, offering the opportunity to experience this supreme expression of Eastern culture—an experience that is otherwise very rare\, if not impossible\, outside of Japan. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION\nwww.fondazionedemarchis.it

SUMMARY:Habitat Artist Residences - “To Speak Is to Create. How Can We Build a Lexicon of Dreams Together?” by Sara Ricciardi
DESCRIPTION:L’Aquila\, Italy’s 2026 Capital of Culture\, is transforming into an open-air studio. In May\, renowned designer Sara Ricciardi will choose our city for an artist residency that blends design\, art\, and storytelling. This is not merely a visit\, but a journey of exploration in which objects\, colors\, and shapes become the language for exploring the emotions and collective imagination of a vibrant community. \nThe residency opens its doors to the public with a series of workshops and creative gatherings scheduled for May 22–24: a unique opportunity to experience the artistic process up close\, exchange ideas\, and collaborate on the creation of a new urban vision. Through a multidisciplinary approach\, the research will explore the fine line between function and symbolism\, between the irony of everyday life and the depth of a poetic gesture. \nThe project will culminate in a site-specific visual installation that will take root in the streets of L’Aquila\, transforming public space into a museum of the imagination. Participating means actively contributing to this narrative\, leaving a tangible mark on our city’s cultural landscape. An open invitation to everyone: let yourself be inspired by form as it becomes story. \nDATES AND TIMES OF THE MEETINGS: \n\nFriday\, May 22\, 10:00 a.m. | 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | 6:30 p.m.\nSaturday\, May 23\, 10:00 a.m. | 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | 6:30 p.m.\nSunday\, May 24\, 10:00 a.m. | 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | 6:30 p.m.\n\nFor information and to make a reservation (required)\, please email habitatlaquila2026@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Aquilani Soloists & Simon Zhu
DESCRIPTION:As part of the program for L’Aquila\, Italian Capital of Culture 2026\, the city is hosting an event of extraordinary artistic and human significance: a concert by violinist Simon Zhu\, dedicated to the memory of Fabrizio De Agostini Dragonetti de Torres\, one year after his passing. The undisputed star of the evening is Simon Zhu\, a prodigious talent born in 2001 who made international headlines for winning the prestigious 2023 “Paganini Prize” in Genoa\, where he also received the special award for the best performance of a Paganini concerto. \nZhu’s career is marked by legendary successes\, from his debut at the Berliner Philharmonie to collaborations with conductors of the caliber of Sir Antonio Pappano and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Recently honored with an audience with King Charles III following a performance with the London Symphony Orchestra\, Simon Zhu will bring to L’Aquila the refined technique he acquired at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona under the guidance of Salvatore Accardo. The audience will have the opportunity to hear an exceptional performer playing a rare 1760 Zosimo Bergonzi violin\, in an evening that weaves together the memory of a pivotal figure in the community with the sublime beauty of the great international violin repertoire. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION: \nwww.solistiaquilani.it \n
