Process<\/span><\/div><div class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-div wpex-mb-15 wpex-text-center\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">ITALIAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2026<\/span><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since 2014, pursuant to Decree-Law No. 83 of May 31, 2014, converted with amendments by Law No. 106 of July 29, 2014, following a proposal by the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, and in light of the strong participation of Italian cities in the selection process for the 2019 European Capital of Culture, the Italian Capital of Culture initiative was established, with the aim of promoting projects and activities that highlight Italy\u2019s cultural heritage\u2014both tangible and intangible\u2014through a process of exchange and competition among different local communities, thereby stimulating growth in tourism and related investments.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By Decree No. 383 of April 21, 2023, issued by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, the \u201cCall for Applications for the Title of \u2018Italian Capital of Culture\u2019 for the Year 2026\u201d was approved. This call identifies as potential candidates municipalities, metropolitan cities, and associations of municipalities that did not participate in the two previous editions and that express their intention to participate by submitting a written expression of interest by July 4, 2023. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As stated in Article 2 of the Call for Proposals, \u201cthe \u2018Italian Capital of Culture\u2019 initiative has as its general objective to support, encourage, and promote the planning and implementation capabilities of Italian cities in the field of culture, so that the value of culture as a catalyst for social cohesion, integration, creativity, innovation, growth, economic development, and individual and collective well-being is increasingly recognized\u201d. The initiative pursues the following specific objectives:  <\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>improving cultural offerings, promoting social inclusion, and bridging the cultural divide;<\/li>\n<li>strengthening social cohesion and inclusion, as well as fostering public participation;<\/li>\n<li>strengthening cultural attractions to boost tourism, including by spreading visitor numbers more evenly throughout the year;<\/li>\n<li>the use of new technologies, including to foster greater engagement among younger generations and improve accessibility; the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative sectors;<\/li>\n<li>the achievement of sustainable results in the field of cultural innovation;<\/li>\n<li>the pursuit of the goals set forth in the UN\u2019s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The City of L\u2019Aquila recognized the opportunity presented by the call for applications and submitted its expression of interest in the candidacy (Ref. No. 66544, dated July 4, 2023), thereby becoming one of the 26 cities vying for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2026, with the aim of promoting the historical, artistic, and landscape resources that the region offers, as well as strengthening the existing network with local cultural operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As part of the process of preparing the application dossier, the City of L\u2019Aquila issued a specific call for expressions of interest directed at public institutions, cultural organizations, and associations that play an active role in the cultural and creative sector of the L\u2019Aquila area and the 2009 earthquake-affected region, with the aim of gathering project proposals that address one of the four thematic areas already included in the new European agenda for culture: health and well-being, social cohesion, innovation, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There was also a clear desire to establish close collaboration with the Municipality of Rieti, the Abruzzo Region, the Special Office for the Reconstruction of L\u2019Aquila (USRA), the Special Office for the Reconstruction of the \u201cCrater\u201d Municipalities (USRC), and the Special Office for Post-Earthquake Reconstruction 2016 for the Abruzzo Region (USR ABRUZZO), with whom a specific memorandum of understanding was signed, approved by City Council Resolution No. 435 of September 20, 2023, aimed at outlining the terms of commitment within the framework of L\u2019Aquila\u2019s candidacy process. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The City of L&#8217;Aquila submitted its application dossier for the 2026 Capital of Culture title by the deadline specified in the call for applications, and has thus been officially included among the sixteen cities vying for that title.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a statement dated December 13, 2023, the Ministry of Culture announced that the jury for the selection of the 2026 Italian Capital of Culture, chaired by Davide Maria Desario, has chosen the 10 finalist projects, including the project \u201cL\u2019Aquila: Multiverse City,\u201d submitted by the City of L\u2019Aquila, and invited the participating cities to a public hearing to present their projects before the committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On March 14, 2024, the city of L\u2019Aquila was designated the 2026 Italian Capital of Culture by the Ministry of Culture, based on its application titled \u201cL\u2019Aquila: Multiverse City,\u201d which contains an ambitious program of artistic experimentation aimed at creating a culturally-based model for the region\u2019s socioeconomic revitalization\u2014one capable of propelling the city toward the future and founded on four pillars: social cohesion, well-being, innovation, and environmental sustainability. The dossier comprises five themes\u2014multiculturalism, multidisciplinarity, multitemporality, multireproducibility, and multinaturalism\u2014that explore the cultural and environmental complexity and richness that characterize L\u2019Aquila, Rieti, the partner city, and the surrounding villages, through a rich program of initiatives. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The following are the jury\u2019s reasons, as stated by the jury chaired by <strong>Davide Maria Desario<\/strong> at the conclusion of the selection process:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The proposal outlines a model for promoting the region and its cultural, artistic, and natural heritage. It aims to restore a sense of identity, focusing on culture as a driver of growth and a foundational element of a community. The project involves a significant number of organizations, creating a strong bond with the surrounding areas. The proposed budget is consistent with the objectives. The outlined spending strategy is expected to have a significant multiplier effect. The schedule of events and initiatives spans the entire year and covers the full spectrum of artistic and cultural expression: film, theater, music, and the visual arts. We appreciate the focus on young people, who will not merely be spectators but active participants. The project meets the call for proposals\u2019 criteria, demonstrating good integration between the public and private sectors. The central role and involvement of the museum, library, and university systems are highly appreciated. The evaluation is excellent.         <\/em><em>\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cL\u2019Aquila: Multiverse City\u201d is an ambitious artistic experimentation program aimed at creating a culturally-based model for the region\u2019s socioeconomic revitalization\u2014one capable of propelling the city toward the future by following the four pillars of the new European agenda for culture: social cohesion, public health and well-being, creativity and innovation, and socio-environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Envisioning L\u2019Aquila as a multiverse city means seeing it as a complex reality in which multiple parallel dimensions coexist and interact\u2014a city that opens up unexplored possibilities for artistic creativity and urban regeneration, precisely thanks to the dialogic coexistence of multiple spatiotemporal and cultural dimensions. L\u2019Aquila, as a multiverse city, can thus serve as a replicable model of sustainable development for Rieti as well as for inland areas in Italy and Europe. A model that aims to intelligently reshape the relationship between the urban center and a constellation of small towns with strong social and cultural identities. In this sense, it is a region that remains vibrant and capable of envisioning a plan for the future, but one that needs a decisive push to usher in a new, truly generative cycle.   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The five themes\u2014multiculturalism, multidisciplinarity, multitemporality, multireproducibility, and multinaturalism\u2014will explore, through a rich program of initiatives, the cultural and environmental complexity and richness that characterize L\u2019Aquila, Rieti, and the surrounding villages.
