From May 16 to June 20, the Giorgio de Marchis Bonanni d\u2019Ocre Foundation is hosting an extraordinary journey into the essence of Japanese art. This project combines Eastern sensibilities with the history of L\u2019Aquila, celebrating the ability to start anew after adversity. <\/b><\/h2>\n

2026 is shaping up to be a year of great cultural vibrancy for L\u2019Aquila. As part of the rich program for L\u2019Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026<\/b>, the project \u201cNanakorobi Yaoki \u2013 Fall Seven Times, Get Up the Eighth\u201d<\/b> is opening its doors to the public. The initiative, promoted and supported by the City of L\u2019Aquila<\/b>, serves as an ideal bridge between Italy and Japan, celebrating Noh theater as a millennia-old art form. <\/p>\n

L’Aquila’s International Reach<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The importance of this connection was emphasized by the Mayor of L\u2019Aquila, Pierluigi Biondi<\/b>: \u201cL\u2019Aquila, the 2026 Italian Capital of Culture, reaffirms its role as a meeting place for civilizations and universal languages. <\/i>Through the \u2018Nanakorobi Yaoki\u2019 project, the De Marchis Foundation brings the essence of Noh theater\u2014an art form dating back millennia\u2014to the heart of our city. Hosting this event means honoring the memory of Giorgio de Marchis, who did so much to foster dialogue between Italy and Japan, and reaffirming our city\u2019s international vocation, which enables it to look to the future through the power of culture<\/i>.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Imagining the Invisible: The Heart of the Exhibition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The heart of the event is the photography exhibition \u201cImagining the Invisible\u201d<\/b> by Fabio Massimo Fioravanti<\/b>. Through 100 photographs taken over more than 35 years of travel in Japan, the artist takes us behind the scenes of the N\u014d Theater, revealing secret places such as the \u201cmirror room\u201d and the meticulous preparation work of the actors. <\/p>\n

The exhibition goes beyond photography: enriching the exhibition are 40 ukiyo-e<\/i> prints by the master Tsukioka Kogyo (on display for the first time in Italy), original masks by the artist Keiko Udaka, and authentic stage costumes. A unique opportunity to discover a form of theater that is, at once, literature, music, dance, and poetry. <\/p>\n

A Dialogue Among Regions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Foundation\u2019s director, Diana Di Berardino<\/b>, explains the deeper origins of this project: \u201cThe project aims to enhance and deepen the dialogue between the L\u2019Aquila region and the Foundation itself with Japan\u2014a country that is geographically distant but closely connected in terms of history and sensibilities. These are two regions that share a history marked by similar experiences; they have both known the pain of destruction but, at the same time, have overcome it all through art, culture, and remembrance. Time and again, these places have found the strength to face their fate and to return to life and rebuild.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The motto \u201cNanakorobi Yaoki\u201d<\/i> thus becomes a shared vision: falling and finding the strength to get back up\u2014once again\u2014is the very essence of this cultural journey.<\/p>\n
