Data confirming L’Aquila as the ideal Italian Capital of Culture for 2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

L\u2019Aquila, September 1, 2025 \u2013 The 731st edition of the Perdonanza Celestiniana, an event that has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2019, came to a close on Saturday, August 30. This year’s event saw impressive numbers: 3,924 visitors at the Info Points alone.<\/p>\n

The following are the figures for visits recorded at the Info Point in July and August 2025, as well as during the week of the 731st edition of the Perdonanza Celestiniana (August 23\u201329), compared with the figures from 2024:<\/p>\n

There has been a significant overall increase (+42.5%) compared to the previous year. August 2025 saw the largest increase in both absolute and percentage terms, with over 850 more visitors than in 2024 (+53.9%). July 2025 also showed a positive trend, with an increase of 318 visits (+27.1%), indicating a growing trend already at the start of the summer season.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa Perdonanza continues to be a crossroads of art, faith, and culture, an ideal bridge to the events of the Italian Capital of Culture,\u201d said Pierluigi Biondi, mayor of L\u2019Aquila and president of the Perdonanza Committee \u2013 \u201cThe data show that the city is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Specifically, there were 2,433 visits in August, in addition to the 1,491 in July. Most visitors came from northern Italy (about 60% of the total); the regions with the highest number of visitors were: Lombardy (431), Lazio (326), Tuscany (273), and Emilia-Romagna (174).<\/p>\n

The international component was also significant: foreign visitors came mainly from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Spain, not to mention non-European visitors from the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. There were also visitors from unusual countries such as Macedonia, Israel, and the Czech Republic, confirming the growing appeal of the Perdonanza even outside of Western Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese figures show that the Perdonanza is an event capable of attracting visitors from all over Italy and the world,\u201d commented Ersilia Lancia, Councilor for Tourism, International Relations, and Sister Cities for the City of L\u2019Aquila \u2013 \u201cThis result reinforces L\u2019Aquila\u2019s role as a major tourist and cultural hub, looking ahead to 2026.\u201d Data on tourist visits to the information point also reveal strong growth, showing a significant overall increase of 42% compared to last year, with August recording the largest increase in both absolute numbers and percentage terms, with over 850 more visitors than in 2024. We are also looking forward to analyzing the feedback we will receive from the questionnaires that the information point staff have voluntarily distributed to tourists visiting the information point in recent months, but it is clear that we can certainly and finally speak of a conscious form of tourism\u2014one that knows L\u2019Aquila, knows it will be the Italian Capital of Culture, and chooses it for that very reason. We know there is still a great deal of work to be done, but I am confident and satisfied, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all industry professionals who have worked over the past few months,\u201d concluded Lancia.<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s artistic director, Maestro Leonardo De Amicis, was also enthusiastic: \u201cThe 731st edition of the Perdonanza Celestiniana turned into a grand and heartfelt musical embrace, finding in the title of the closing concert, \u2018L\u2019Aquila: A New Era,\u2019 the perfect theme that characterized the entire event.
