One of the world\u2019s most famous Chinese artists blends into the Abruzzo landscape for the first time. From June 11 to 13, 2026, as part of the program for L\u2019Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture, Liu Bolin brings \u201cBeyond the Visible\u201d to Abruzzo: three public performances in three iconic locations across the region, from L\u2019Aquila to the crater mountains, all the way to the National Park. In October, the three previously unseen photographs will be featured in an exhibition at Palazzo Margherita. <\/b><\/h2>\n

There are artists you can’t see\u2014and that’s precisely why you can’t ignore them. <\/span>Liu Bolin<\/b>, born in Shandong in 1973 and known worldwide as <\/span>“the invisible man”<\/b>, is coming <\/span>to Abruzzo for the first time<\/b> with <\/span>Beyond the Visible<\/b>: a performance and photography project sponsored by <\/span>Geely Auto<\/b> \u2014 China\u2019s leading automotive brand operating in Italy through Jameel Motors \u2014 in collaboration with <\/span>Galleria Gaburro<\/b>, as part of the program for the<\/span>\u201cL\u2019Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026\u201d<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three days, three iconic locations in the Abruzzo region, three previously unpublished photographs: starting <\/span>Thursday, the 11th<\/b> through <\/span>Saturday, June 13<\/b>, Liu Bolin\u2019s performances will transform the <\/span>Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L\u2019Aquila<\/b>, the <\/span>Rocca Calascio Fortress<\/b> , and the <\/span>forests of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park<\/b> in Pescasseroli will serve as the stages for an artistic process open to the public, which visitors will be able to observe live in all its phases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Is Liu Bolin: The Artist Who Disappears<\/b><\/h3>\n

Liu Bolin<\/b> is one of the most important Chinese contemporary artists working internationally. His artistic practice is based on a unique technique: through sophisticated sessions of <\/span>body painting<\/b> lasting for hours, the artist has himself painted by a team of collaborators until he blends in perfectly with his surroundings\u2014a wall, a building, a landscape, or supermarket shelving\u2014and is then photographed at the point of maximum camouflage, often on the verge of being imperceptible.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result is highly recognizable imagery that explores profound themes: the relationship between <\/span>the individual and society<\/b>, and between <\/span>presence and absence<\/b>, and between <\/span>identity and invisibility<\/b>. A practice rooted in political critique\u2014Liu Bolin\u2019s early works emerged in response to the forced demolition of his studio in Beijing in 2005\u2014and which, over time, has expanded into a more universal reflection on the meaning of place and the memory of territories.<\/span><\/p>\n

His works have been exhibited in major museums and institutions around the world: <\/span>Centre Pompidou<\/b> in Paris, <\/span>Maison Europ\u00e9enne de la Photographie<\/b>, <\/span>Mudec \u2013 Museum of Cultures<\/b> in Milan, <\/span>Palazzo Vecchio<\/b> in Florence. In <\/span>2023,<\/b> his portraits became part of the <\/span>collection of the Uffizi Gallery<\/b>. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with brands such as Moncler, Valentino, and Ruinart. He lives and works in Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n

“When creating my works, I prefer locations that can tell the story of human society and its evolution,” said <\/span>Liu Bolin<\/b>. \u201cEngaging with Abruzzo\u2014a region that is new to me and rich in identity\u2014is a great honor, made even more meaningful in the year that L\u2019Aquila is the Italian Capital of Culture. Through these performances, I aim to create a dialogue between human presence and the landscape, inviting the public to look beyond the visible and rediscover the symbolic and cultural value of these places.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Three Performances: Venues, Dates, and Times<\/b><\/h3>\n

Thursday, June 11 \u2014 Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, L’Aquila<\/b><\/h4>\n

11:00 a.m. \u2013 5:00 p.m.<\/b> | Piazzale Collemaggio 5, L’Aquila<\/span><\/p>\n

The first performance takes place in front of one of the most iconic monuments in L’Aquila and in all of medieval Italy: the <\/span>Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio<\/b>, with its white and pink stone fa\u00e7ade overlooking the square of the same name. Here, Liu Bolin will begin the lengthy process of preparing his body painting, blending seamlessly with the geometric patterns and colors of the Romanesque fa\u00e7ade, before capturing the final photograph.<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday, June 12 \u2014 Rocca Calascio<\/b><\/h3>\n

The second performance takes Liu Bolin to over <\/span>1,400 meters above sea level<\/b>, at the site of the <\/span>Rocca Calascio Castle<\/b>: the medieval fortress of Gran Sasso, one of the highest in Italy and among the most photographed in Europe, which has previously served as an international film set. A setting of exceptional scenic grandeur that tests the artist\u2019s ability to blend into the stone, the sky, and the Apennine horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saturday, June 13 \u2014 Pescasseroli, Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park<\/b><\/h3>\n

3:00 p.m. \u2013 6:00 p.m.<\/b> | Monte Tranquillo dirt road, Pescasseroli<\/span><\/h4>\n

The third and final performance takes the project to the green heart of the Apennines: the <\/span>centuries-old forests of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park<\/b> in Pescasseroli. The project is carried out in collaboration with <\/span>ARTEPARCO<\/b>, the initiative that has been promoting dialogue between contemporary art and nature within the park since 2018. Here, Liu Bolin engages not with man-made stone but with the natural landscape, attempting to blend into the forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attending the performances: what to expect<\/b><\/h3>\n

Each event is <\/span>open to the public<\/b> and offers a rare opportunity: to witness firsthand Liu Bolin\u2019s entire creative process, from the preparation of the body paint\u2014which can take several hours of manual work by the artist\u2019s team\u2014to the framing of the photographic composition, right up to the final shot. Not an exhibition, but an artistic act in progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October: the exhibition at Palazzo Margherita<\/b><\/h3>\n

The three photographs taken during the June performances will be the centerpiece of an <\/span>exhibition<\/b> set to open in<\/span>October 2026<\/b> at <\/span>Palazzo Margherita<\/b>, a historic building in L\u2019Aquila that houses the city hall. The exhibition will bring the \u201cOltre il visibile\u201d project full circle, transforming ephemeral performances into works that can be experienced permanently.<\/span><\/p>\n
