Launch of “L’Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026”: All Traffic Changes for January 16 and 17 in the Historic Center
On the occasion of the official opening of the “L’Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026” year, scheduled for Saturday, January 17, the City of L’Aquila informs residents that significant temporary traffic changes will be implemented in the areas affected by the events scheduled for the afternoon. These changes will affect the Parco del Castello and Piazza Battaglione Alpini (Fontana Luminosa), where the drone show will take place. Additional events are planned in Piazza Duomo and, in the evening, will feature performances by street artists and roaming musicians.
Parking space reserved for people with disabilities
Please be advised that the municipal parking lot on Via Pio Iorio (Porta Castello) will be reserved exclusively for vehicles serving people with disabilities for the entire duration of the event on January 17.
Traffic Changes – Phases and Schedules
From 8:00 p .m. on January 15 to 5:00 a.m. on January 16, and from 8:00 p.m. on January 16 to 5:00 a.m. on January 17, the following will be in effect:
- No-traffic and no-parking zones (with towing ) on Via Tagliacozzo;
- No vehicle traffic and no parking (with towing ) on Via Pio Iorio, on the section between the entrance to the municipal parking lot and Piazzale Ulrichs, including the square itself.
Saturday, January 17, from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- No-traffic and no-parking zones (with towing ) on Via Pio Iorio (between the parking lot and Piazzale Ulrichs).
Saturday, January 17, from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- Complete closure to traffic and no parking on Via Tagliacozzo;
- Complete closure and no-parking zone on Via Pio Iorio (between the parking lot and Piazzale Ulrichs);
- the municipal parking lot on Via Pio Iorio, reserved entirely for people with disabilities;
- No traffic or parking (except for authorized vehicles) on Via Castello and Via Malta;
- No traffic or parking in Piazza Battaglione Alpini; the bus stop has been moved to Viale Gran Sasso, on the right-hand side heading toward Fontana Luminosa, on the stretch between the crosswalk and the square;
- One-way traffic on Via Pescara, on the section between Via Zara and Via Strinella, heading toward Via Strinella;
- On Via Zara, at the intersection with Via Pescara, vehicles coming from San Bernardino must turn right.
Permitted Access
Between 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., access:
- the San Bernardino and Santa Maria di Farfa area;
- at the parking lot for people with disabilities on Via Pio Iorio
This will only be possible by following this route: Via Fortebraccio – Via San Bernardino – Via Panfilo Tedeschi – Via Zara.
Saturday, January 17, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- No traffic or parking on Corso Principe Umberto I and Via Bafile (the section between Corso P. Umberto I and Via Camponeschi), on the right-hand side heading toward San Bernardino;
- Via delle Aquile: Access is restricted to residents and authorized vehicles only; in addition, parking is prohibited (except for authorized vehicles) in two parking spaces from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.;
- Via Bafile (between Via Camponeschi and Via Roma): one-way traffic toward Via Duca degli Abruzzi and no parking on the left side;
- Via Roma (between Via Bafile and Via Duca degli Abruzzi): one-way traffic toward Via Duca degli Abruzzi.
Temporary Closures During Performances
During the two drone shows—each lasting about 15 minutes—scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., there will be a temporary ban on vehicle traffic in:
- Gran Sasso Avenue;
- Via Nizza, at the intersection with Via Duca degli Abruzzi.
PARKING AND SHUTTLE SERVICE
To facilitate the arrival of participants, the City of L’Aquila has set up a free shuttle bus service and, at the same time, designated specific parking areas—which are also free—located in various parts of the city.
Parking
- “Lorenzo Natali” Bus Terminal Megaparking Lot: The free megaparking lot has a total of 640 parking spaces located on levels -2 and -3 of the facility, where dedicated staff will be on hand to manage access.
- Municipal Parking Lot: At the municipal parking lot, located on Via Rocco Carabba, 400 parking spaces will be available in an area marked off by a designated entrance staffed by dedicated personnel.
- Via Filomusi Guelfi-Villa Gioia (near the courthouse): 200 parking spaces are available.
- Please also note that there are 88 parking spaces available at the Porta Leoni parking lot (paid) and approximately 40 on Largo Pischedda (parking disc required).
In total, there are 1,368 parking spaces.
Shuttle Service
The shuttles will be identifiable by their graphics and colors, which will vary depending on the route.
- Blue Shuttle: Route from Autoparco to Villa Gioia to Villa Comunale to Collemaggio Terminal from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; runs every 20 minutes. Recommended stop: Villa Comunale.
- Red Shuttle: Terminal/Fontana Luminosa from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; runs every 20 minutes (until 2:00 p.m., it travels along Via San Bernardino). Recommended stop: Viale Gran Sasso.
