An open call is now open to individual citizens of all ages, associations, groups, and diverse communities to participate in SOND The School of Narrative Dance, a project conceived by artist Marinella Senatore, funded by the City of L’Aquila as part of the L’Aquila—Italian Capital of Culture 2026 program, and presented by the MAXXI Foundation—National Museum of 21st-Century Arts.
The School of Narrative Dance is a participatory artistic project that is coming to L’Aquila after having already been piloted in other countries, with the aim of creating together through movement, music, voice, and presence. The project will culminate on Sunday, June 7, in a large collective parade that will wind through the city’s streets: not a conventional performance, but an open and inclusive ritual that takes shape through the participants themselves.
The event will take the form of a series of guided sessions—based on mutual listening, group awareness, and the creation of a shared presence—to be held over the coming months, from March through May, at MAXXI L’Aquila. Participation does not require learning new skills or preparing specific choreography or repertoires.
Throughout the process, all art forms, all bodies, and all experiences will come together in a shared space, and the final performance will be, in Marinella Senatore’s words, “a physical and social experience, an act of encounter and belonging.” The project aims to connect a community that finds its identity precisely in the plurality and diversity of its participants.
