Nanakorobi Yaoki “Fall seven times, get up the eighth”
A meeting with artist Keiko Udaka, who will demonstrate the art of creating a Nō mask, blending tradition and innovation.
Nō is a dramatic theatrical form consisting of music, singing, mimetic movements, and dance, passed down from master to disciple since its inception in the late 14th century. Through its masks, Nō theater explores human emotions: love, jealousy, anger, ferocity, passion, betrayal, redemption, and death.
The Giorgio de Marchis Foundation has decided to feature Nō theater as part of L’Aquila’s bid to become the Italian Capital of Culture 2026, offering the opportunity to experience this supreme expression of Eastern culture—an experience that is otherwise very rare, if not impossible, outside of Japan.
