Music Per-Formare. A Conversation with Musicologist Ilaria Giani: “Conductors Without an Orchestra: Classical Music and Gender Stereotypes”
“Musica Per-Formare – Dialogues Between Sounds, Words, and New Cultural Frontiers.” The second event of the Barattelli project for L’Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026, features musicologist Ilaria Giani.
Ilaria Giani, a native of Cremona with degrees in piano and musicology who teaches at a middle school, sheds light on conducting by women while exploring the challenges women face in the music profession in Italy.
Ilaria Giani introduces the event as follows: “What are the gender stereotypes associated with the world of classical music? How do they affect choices regarding academic and professional paths? What symbolic barriers still hinder the full recognition of women in the role of conductors? These questions will drive a discussion supported by data and personal accounts.”
Admission is free. The event will be streamed live on the Società Aquilana dei Concerti Facebook page.
