Barattelli” as part of L’Aquila: Italian Capital of Culture 2026, renowned music critic Sandro Cappelletto discusses “Franz Schubert’s String Quartets.”
Schubert composed fifteen string quartets, in addition to various separate movements, between 1812 and 1826. Only one—the String Quartet in A minor, D. 804—was published during the composer’s lifetime. Of the other fourteen, nine were made available before 1870 by the publisher Peters, and the remainder appeared in print in 1890 as part of the complete edition of his works, published in forty volumes by Breitkopf & Haertel between 1884 and 1897. “The most daring and free-spirited of all modern musicians”—this is how Robert Schumann described Franz Schubert, whose final years have been the subject of studies, research, and a publication by Sandro Cappelletto.
