The July 18 concert: 1,600 people at the San Bernardino Staircase

The premiere on July 18 brought together about 1,600 people at the foot of the San Bernardino Staircase, on one of the most significant evenings of the entire Cantieri dell’Immaginario festival. Nicola Piovani conducted his own opera in a setting that transformed the historic center of L’Aquila into one of Italy’s most evocative stages.

Also on the program, along with the Missa Pro Pace, the Prelude to the Canticle: a preview of a new work that Piovani is dedicating to the “Canticle of the Creatures” by St. Francis of Assisi — a project that has yet to be released, previewed for the first time right here in L’Aquila.

“It is with immense pride that we welcome the broadcast of the ‘Missa Pro Pace’ on RAI 5,” said Barattelli’s Artistic Director, Fabrizio Pezzopane —. The work that Nicola Piovani conducted in its world premiere right here in L’Aquila, on the marvelous San Bernardino Staircase, on the 80th anniversary of the Società Aquilana dei Concerti. Special thanks to Rai Cultura for bringing the excellence of the Umbrian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Choir of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, Barbara Ronchi, and all the performers into the homes of millions of Italians, with the power of such an urgent and necessary message. Sharing that moment during prime time on RAI 5 confirms the central role and national prestige accorded to our musical institution and to our city, as the 2026 Capital of Culture.”
