Hermann Buhl – Beyond Every Summit by Werner Bertolan (L’Aquila Mountain Fest 2026: “A Life Dedicated to the Mountains”)
On July 3, 1953, Hermann Buhl accomplished one of the most extraordinary feats in the history of mountaineering: the first solo, oxygen-free ascent of Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain in the world. During his 41-hour traverse, Buhl braved the unknown, extreme exhaustion, and solitude, marking a turning point in modern mountaineering. Through archival footage, testimonies, and moving reenactments, the documentary produced by Albolina Film and directed by Werner Bertolan retraces the key milestones of Buhl’s life, exploring not only his mountaineering feats but also the personal aspects that made him a unique and unforgettable figure.
